Gar and Mar
lene
,
Thank you for all the good work you two have done over the years on the TCHS Class of '59 web site and communications.

And I have changed email to mann2150@gmail.com

We have a student at the University of Georgia from TC. She is in the Master of Landscape Architecture program; graduates in 2015.  Her name Jenna Mason.

Also, one of my former students from the University of Georgia now lives in TC.  She is Kathy Coffin BLA, 1997), and her husband is Dr. John Sheard, a veterinarian.  She also has a BFA degree from our Art Department.  She was an Olympic swimmer and still holds several records.  She coaches swimming for Grand Traverse Masters.  Watch for her name in the RE.

I will not be able to attend the 55th Reunion, but will be there in spirit.

All the best to y'all.

I greatly look forward to the 55th!  I live a life of sport with a 15 hour a week exercise program of hiking, biking, skiing in winter and strength training and had fantastic trip to Russia in June.

We have had smoke in Jackson Hole for about a month from fires one of which threatened the
town which brought in 800 firefighters and all sorts of helicopters.  Thankfully, the fire is contained...lots of confused bear, deer and moose have wandered into town...I live on a creek and a mountain lion spent the night sleeping in the tall grass in my small garden.  He had followed the deer down from the fire...his favorite dinner!  Cheers to all,  Mary

HI Pat and Class of 59' from Sharon (Sullivan) Oelke.   I believe that Sue Martinson  was  living in Milwaukee last we tried.  We stopped at her home but no one answered.  Since this was a few years ago, no up to date information here either.

We moved about a year and a half ago, but I dont remember if we updated you or not.  So here is the following; our phone is the same,  262-338-1064, the email is the same, and name and address are as followes -- Leland and Sharon Oelke,  1998 Co Hway NN, West Bend, WI, 53095-9712.
If you had trouble getting through, its cause my space got overloaded, and they didnt tell me.  I'm not very good at this anyway.   I get to email with Lois Lewis Oelker.

We are all gettin so much older.  I'll take time to check the web site.  We have been so very busy with Dr's and our new place. It's out in the country a bit, and takes a lot of time to get things done.  Our son, Rob, is doing the mowing, or most of it that gets done and things like that.  We even had three BIG pumpkins from the flower bed, thats fun.  Frost has taken the leaves.  Our  Air Force group is meeing in TC as I write, and wish we could have come but had some Dr. stuff to do here. Best Wishes to everyone.  Hugs,   Sharon (Sullivan) Oelke and Lee.

Aleeta Hollister Haskins 50th Wedding Anniversary news?

Our children came in from California, Texas, and Georgia with their children to give us a wonderful send off into the next phase of our life together.   Beside our three kids, their spouses and six grandchildren with us my Maid of Honor and her husband also came in from Iowa to help us celebrate.   The day was just like it was 50 years ago on August 18th when we were married in Grand Rapids. Beautiful.

Just one of the highlights of the afternoon was our 7 year old Grand daughter from Texas playing The Wedding March as we entered the room.

Even though there are only 15 in our family it is very hard to get all of them together so this was an extra special occasion. Thanks to Bert's sister and her husband for doing much of the organizing. My son told me they had been talking and trying to coordinate this for the last two years.   Guess they knew we wouldn't do anything special.

Hi to all, just checking in as there seems to have been some problems in contacting me by e-mail.  Sorry that it took so long to respond, vacations, getting ready for hunting camp, (you know the old story).

All is well with the Gilmore's in Montana, as you may be reading about the forest fires in the west, yes it is BAD. Please plan your vacations to the West for June or early July as we never know how hot and dry the summer's will be. The smoke from the fires can be overwhelming.

Hi Pat,

Here is a link to photos from a day tour I took to the Mission Inn in Riverside, CA.
https://picasaweb.google.com/114211686981425345209/MissionInn121812Select?authkey=Gv1sRgCIzHyvbZmbUV .
A good name might be "Christmas Among the Palms."

Riverside was a major source of naval oranges (from Wikipedia):

"In 1873 Eliza Tibbets convinced William Saunders, Superintendent of the fledgling Bureau of Agriculture, to make her a test grower for his new seedless oranges from Bahia, Brazil. By planting and nurturing the orange trees that Saunders sent her, Tibbets revolutionized the citrus industry. Introduction of these oranges, later called the Washington Navel Orange, proved to be the most successful experiment of Saunders' tenure, and one of the outstanding events in the economic and social development of California. For the next 60 years and more, a great industry was built up from the two small trees planted in Riverside by Eliza Tibbets."

So, the California citrus industry was started by a woman who just wanted to grow some oranges in her back yard.  Who'd have guessed.             Merry Christmas

Hello from sunny CA.
I wanted to tell you about our trip to Clint Eastwoods piano bar in Carmel.

We had been looking for a piano bar to visit and couldn't find one, but just before we left, a friend of Chuck's sisters told us about Clint's restaurant /piano Bar in Carmel.  Said it might be a bit pricey, the exceptional piano player who did the musical score for Million Dollar Baby, Clint's movie, plays on Mondays and weekends. His name is Gennady and he plays from 8 -11.

Since our Seaside/ Carmel visit was about over, Chuck and I decided to go for it.  We got there about 7:30, listened to the 1st piano player playing lots of jazz for about 1/2 hour. I'm sitting by piano players right hand, 1st seat at the piano and Chuck next to me.  At 8  - Gennady starts playing.  He's Russian, and doesn't sing, so many very talented people got up to sing after his first hour of playing.  (He's playing everything from Broadway, classical, Jazz, no country.) I'm sure the one guy was a Broadway singer the way he used no mic for his loud projection of voice. The other gal must have been a bar or band singer from the songs she knew.  (Kind of Rosemary Clooney style.)  We conversed with some of the people around us..many were coming to the piano bar part after dining. (Dinners started at high $20's.)  The couple next to us came for 5 months every winter from MN.  They must be wealthy because they appeared in their late 40s and Carmel is $$$.
About 9:45 who should show up but a very casually dressed Clint Eastwood with country singer Clint Black, whose big concert the couple next to us had just attended in Oakland....Clint is certainly aging but attractive, but we thought he would be taller.  Clint Black is short and was just dressed in a ball cap and nylon jacket and jeans...they stood and talked to patrons at the regular bar about 15 feet from us. (On coming in, we had ordered a wine and Chuck had 2 beers, our waitress had brought the bill, and hadn't come back.  I decided I'd have another wine since Clint had come, so Chuck took the bill to the bar to pay, and order another beer and wine. (wine $9, beer 8.50) she brought the drinks and a new bill for $16...Chuck went and told her she had cheated herself out  of our first bill...she checked and came back and said, it is what it is, so our total bill was $16 + a good tip!!)

At about 10:15 we were getting ready to leave &  I asked the piano player if  he knew John Denver's hit, "Take Me Home Country roads..." He said he did and started to play it, when over came Clint with Clint Black. Clint E. introduced Clint B. to Grannady and said Clint B. thinks he knows most of the words to this and would like to sing for us.  I'm about 4 feet from them both and Clint B. proceeds to sing, asking us all to join in on the chorus...what a great voice he has!  After he sings, everybody at the piano starts with the high 5's saying great request Michigan!  The couple who was next to us said thy had come in at least 40 times before they ever saw Clint Eastwood actually come in to his place.  How fun it was! What a fun ending to our No. CA visit!!!

Hearst Mansion was also a big highlight of our trip!

Hello all,

They  finally let me out of the wheel chair, to become mobile on my own two feet at last.  Life is good.  Have a bit of a problem walking yet, I have a hobble, a limp, a gimp as it were. I'm sure this will get better, go away in time. As I use the legs. i have found that too much use of the weight bench is not good. The calves of the legs rebelled big time. The arm is whole another problem.
Besides the upper arm being broke, I also tore the rotator cup. The bone healed alright, however the cup is still getting me a bad time. I do not know if time will take care of it or will the slice and dice be the alternative.

How I got into this fix is still beyond me, I was out in the yard, trimming a tree. Up on a latter. The next thing I remember is being in a hospital. Big knot on the head, Sand an grit all over me. I'm told that I was out cold, an the usual bad things going on. So now you know all that I know.

Well that's all folks.

Dear Pat,

Thanks for all the updates and keeping me informed even though I have not been able to attend the luncheons. Summer is so busy for me but guess that is just the way my life is all year as I choose to never stop moving and doing.
I will be leaving for a trip to Africa on Sept 19 and back to Wash DC on the 29. From there I go to VT to spend a week with 3 college friends that I have been getting together with the last 3 years (after 50 years of not seeing each other). I will be coming back to TC Oct 9 but will be packing up for FL and will close the cottage or move out of it as I have it up for sale. It is too much for me to have 2 places as I love to travel and now the grand kids are starting college and working so don't have the weeks to spend here as they used to do.

I really wanted to tell you that I ran into Sue and Gary Beck. They actually live 2 house down from my daughter and they came during a yard sale we were having. It was great to chat and we hope to have some coffee and chat more again before I leave. It is sad she has the health issues but certainly appreciates all the wonderful notes and cards she has received from our class.

Hi Pat,

I am writing to let you know that, unfortunately, I will not be able to get to Traverse City for our 55th reunion. I am SO disappointed!!! I waited until the last minute to see if I could rearrange my summer teaching schedule, but no such luck. (This is a reminder that I really need to retire and take time for events such as this.)

Please give my very best regards to all of my classmates and let them know I am definitely with you in spirit. Be sure to also thank Garry for being such an excellent keeper of our class history.

Have a wonderful celebration! We are not getting older...just wiser and more fun!!!      Suzanne

Hi Garry & Marlene, enjoy all the information I get through your site. I lost my husband Al of 40 years almost 6 years ago. We had a combined family of 11 children . I now have 28 grandchildren and 33 great grand children.

I of course am not busy. I retired after a number of years of in home care of elderly and disabled. Very enjoyable work. Now I do as little as necessary and enjoy that too. Will continue to follow the site to keep up with the news. I live in South Haven Mi. Just blocks from the lake. Will never be far from it.

Of course my name might be helpful. I'm Eva Haselton Holliday Miller.
